Making history in “O” Division: Raising the Pride rainbow flag in our public lobbies

Pride month provides an opportunity to recognize diversity and celebrate inclusivity.  The RCMP remain committed to creating a healthy, respectful workplace where the diversity of all of our employees is nurtured and supported.  Essential to this healthy environment is the promotion of inclusive workplace.

With the support of the Commanding Officer and in recognition of our diversity; the “O” Division Diversity and Employment Equity Committee in concert with the LGBTQ Network will be displaying the Pride flag in the lobbies of our facilities during the month of June. This action represents as an outward demonstration of our commitment to inclusion and a recognition of our LGBTQ employees.

Members from RCMP “O” Division Diversity and Employment Equity Committee, LGBTQ Employee Network along with Executive members from the province-wide LGBTQ law enforcement network, Serving with Pride, were on hand to officially display the Pride flag at Toronto North Detachment. For the first time, the rainbow flags will be displayed in 14 RCMP public lobbies for the entire month of June to commemorate Pride month.

Background

Gilbert Baker designed the original rainbow flag in 1978 as a positive symbol and visual representation of the gay pride movement and diversity. The modern day flag consists of six colours that represent the diversity within the LGBTQ community and the positive ideals that the community exemplifies.  The flag is universally known and accepted as a symbol of gay pride and diversity, and it is recognized officially by the U.S. International Congress of Flag Makers.

Red symbolizes LIFE
Orange symbolizes HEALING
Yellow symbolizes SUNLIGHT
Green symbolizes NATURE
Indigo/blue symbolizes SERENITY/HARMONY
Violet symbolizes SPIRIT

“The flag is an action – it’s more than just the cloth and the stripes. When a person puts the Rainbow Flag on his car or his house, they’re not just flying a flag. They’re taking action.” – Gilbert Baker, creator of the original rainbow flag.

There is no doubt that seeing the rainbow flags displayed at our “O” Division HQ and Detachments will have a long-lasting positive effect on our employees, partners and the general public.  This is an opportunity for the RCMP, in one small gesture of support, to lead by example and to demonstrate our healthy policies and practices with respect to our LGBTQ employees that serve our country and of whom we serve.

Gas wars cause traffic hazard

The Niagara Regional Police Service is urging motorists to avoid long lines for lower fuel prices that block the flow of traffic.  These lines are not only causing hazards on city streets but are also an offence under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act for impeding traffic; the fine is $110.00 plus points.

These line ups that impede pedestrian and vehicle traffic have the potential to cause a serious collision which could result in injuries and steeper fines.

Motorists are reminded that the savings are minimal and do not outweigh the costs of fines, vehicle collisions, or personal injury.

Incidents of aggressive door-to-door salespeople reported

$
0
0

Investigators with the York Regional Police Major Fraud Unit would like to remind citizens of their rights when it comes to aggressive door-to-door salespeople.

A series of incidents have recently been reported involving door-to-door salespeople offering savings on hot water heaters and furnaces. In most of the reported cases, trusting homeowners have allowed the salespeople into their homes to look at their furnaces and hot water heaters. Following the brief inspection, homeowners are asked to sit down and discuss their monthly utility bills. The salespeople made requests to see copies of utility bills and when homeowners felt uncomfortable and denied the requests, the salespeople became verbally aggressive. No one was injured as a result of these incidents.

Citizens should be cautious of anyone at their door requesting to come inside your home. Before listening to a sales pitch, consider the following:

Ask for photo identification and get the name of the person and the business

Never share personal information (for example, an electricity or gas bill)

If you ask a salesperson to leave, they must leave right away. If you feel unsafe, call police

Look at the company name on the salesperson’s business card and promotional material and see if it matches the company name on the proposed contract

Do not rely on a salesperson’s opinion that your water heater is unsafe or should be replaced

Local utility companies, municipalities, government agencies or regulatory organizations don’t send salespeople door-to-door

You do not have to sign a contract at any time

For more information on door-to-door salespeople and contracts visit: http://www.ontario.ca/consumers/door-door-sales-and-home-service-contracts.

Police rely on information from citizens to help keep our communities safe. If you see suspicious activity in your neighbourhood, contact police. We will respond to these calls and investigate.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police Major Fraud Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6612, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-tips, or leave an anonymous tip online at www.1800222tips.com or text your tip to CRIMES (274637) starting with the word YORK.

A 26-year-old female faces impaired driving charges after she was stopped by an off-duty officer who saw her vehicle speed through a stop sign.

On Thursday, June 2, 2016, at approximately 4:25 p.m., an off-duty officer from North Division was travelling southbound on Regional Road 57 south of Blackstock, behind another car. As they approached McKee Road, a Jeep travelling westbound on McKee Road approached the intersection at a high rate of speed, the Jeep did not stop for the stop sign and then drove across the path of the lead vehicle. Due to the grade of the road, the Jeep, which was travelling at an estimated speed in excess of 100 km/h, became airborne as it soared across Regional Road 57, narrowly missing the southbound vehicles.

The off-duty officer followed the Jeep as it continued westbound and then northbound until it stopped at an address in Blackstock. The off-duty officer prevented the driver from continuing on before responding officers arrived and arrested the female for impaired driving.

Ashleigh McCourt, age 26, of Fralicks Beach Road in Scugog Township, is charged with: Impaired Driving; Dangerous Driving; and Exceed 80 mgs. She was later released on an Undertaking with conditions.

Anyone with new information is asked to contact Cst. Campbell of North Division at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2671.

Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca and tipsters may be eligible for a $2,000 cash reward.
