Three partners team up for roadway safety

The Joint Service Enforcement Team (JSET) handed out more than 400 tickets last month and will continue to focus on distracted driving.

DRPS launched a six-month partnership with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to enhance roadway safety across Durham Region, with a focus on the Big Four Killers and commercial motor vehicle safety.

JSET members conducted enforcement at various locations throughout Durham Region with the following results in May:

407 Tickets issued
13 Summons issued
65 Commercial motor vehicles stopped
72 Commercial motor vehicle charges
42 Commercial motor vehicle Inspections
1 Criminal Code charge
24 Commercial motor vehicles were taken out of service

Officers will continue with a new campaign to enforce distracted driving laws. In September 2015, fines increased to $490 with three demerit points and distracted driving has surpassed impaired driving as the leading cause of fatal collisions.

In 2014, 3671 drivers were charged under the Highway Traffic Act as a result of Distracted Driving in Durham Region. In 2015, 2705 drivers were charged and as of May 27th, 2016, 611 Drivers have been charged as a result of Distracted Driving.

Missing Hamilton man, Andrzej Malec

The Hamilton Police Service is seeking the assistance of the public in locating a missing Hamilton man.

Andrzej MALEC was last seen at his Stoney Creek address on the evening of Thursday May 26, 2016. Police are asking for assistance in locating him to check on his well-being.  It is believed MALEC may have been headed to Mississauga, Toronto or Niagara Falls.

Andrzej MALEC is described as:

Caucasian, 6’0, 198lbs, medium build, short brown hair, goatee. Unknown clothing description.missing_person

Charges laid following $20,000 fraud in Georgina

Investigators with the York Regional Police Major Fraud Unit have charged a 42-year-old woman in connection with a fraud against the Georgina Chamber of Commerce of more than $20,000.

In January 2016, officers with the Major Fraud Unit began an investigation after receiving a report of a fraud against the Georgina Chamber of Commerce by an employee. Investigators determined that that during the employee’s tenure, a series of fraudulent cheques and document forgeries began to occur.  This was discovered after an internal audit was conducted. The accused’s employment was terminated.

On Wednesday, June 1, 2016, the accused was arrested and charged.

Charged:
  • Monique DIXON, 42, of  the Town of Georgina
Charges:
  • Fraud Over $5,000
  • Breach of Trust by Public Official

The accused will be appearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on June 30, 2016.

The investigation is ongoing. Police seek suspects following armed coffee shop robbery in the City of Markham

Investigators with the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit are seeking public assistance in identifying two suspects following an armed robbery at a coffee shop in the City of Markham.

On Friday, June 3, 2016, just after midnight, two male suspects entered a coffee shop located in the area of Steeles Avenue East and Don Mills Road and jumped over the front counter. One of the suspects assaulted a female employee and made a demand for cash from the till. The other suspect stood by, pointing a handgun at employees. The employees complied with the suspects demands and the suspects fled to an awaiting car, which fled south on Don Mills Road.

It is believed these same suspects were responsible for a robbery that had occurred in the City of Barrie earlier in the night.

Wearing a blue hoodie, black pants, black running shoes and a white mask covering his face

Suspect #2:

Male, black
5’ 10”
Thin build

Port Colborne man air-lifted to hospital following a single vehicle crash in Welland

At approximately 2:45 a.m. on Friday, June 3rd, 2016 the Niagara Regional Police Service, along with the Niagara Emergency Medical Services and the Welland Fire Department responded to reports of a single vehicle collision on Moyer Road south of Young Road in the City of Welland, within the Regional Municipality of Niagara, Ontario.

Initial investigation revealed that a 32-year-old Port Colborne man was operating a 2013 Ram pick-up truck southbound on Moyer Road. The Ram initially crossed over the centreline and left the east edge of roadway before being over-corrected back onto and across the roadway. As the Ram left the west edge of roadway it entered into the westerly ditch where it rolled an undetermined number of times.During the rollover sequence the driver and sole occupant was ejected from the pick-up truck, suffering life-threatening injuries. He was initially transported to the Niagara Health System from where he was transferred by air-ambulance to an out of region trauma centre.Local residence heard the collision and immediately responded, providing assistance till emergency services personnel arrived.Speed was a contributing factor in the seriousness of the injuries suffered by the driver.

Police are still investigating with regards to other contributing factors.The driver’s name is not being released at this time.This incident remains under investigation by Detectives of the Niagara Regional Police Services Collision Reconstruction Unit. Suspicious female in Niagara Falls

On June 01, 2016 at 3:15 pm an 11 year old boy was walking was home from School in the area of Devon Drive and Cumberland Court, Niagara Falls.  He was two homes down the street from his house when the passenger of a red/burgundy van that driving in the same direction waived at him. The boy waived back, an elderly female opened the door and asked him if he needed a ride home.  He did not respond and ran home. No license plate was obtained. He only noticed that the driver of the vehicle was a male driver.

The boy was not injured and no physical contact was made.

The female was described as:

-White, 45-50 years
-Wearing blue jean shorts

On June 2nd, 2016 at 11:30am a woman was in the parking lot of the Niagara Square with her two children.  They were approached by a white female in her 50-60’s. The unknown female told the woman that she had baked a cake for a friend who turned out not to be home and wanted her to have it.  The offer was first declined but the women eventually took the cake.

The woman was seen leaving in a red/maroon mini-van. 

The incident was reported to police as she remembered seeing something about a red/maroon van on Facebook.

On June 02, 2016 at 9:00 a burgundy van with tinted windows was seen in the area of Shannon Drive, Niagara Falls.  The van was driving slowly down the street.

Due to recent Facebook posts the incident was reported to the NRPS.

The female was described as:

-female white in her 50’s with a long brown hair and glasses

The NRPS would like to identify the female to determine her intentions.  At present there is no apparent criminal offence that has been alleged or committed.

Peel Police search for missing 28 year-old female

Mississauga – Officers from the 12 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a missing 28 year-old female from Mississauga.

Ksenia VILKOVA was last seen on Monday June 2nd at approximately 6:00pm by her mother and brother at her residence in the area of Rathburn Road East and Garnetwood Chase in the City of Mississauga.

Ksenia VILKOVA is described as female, white, 5’3” tall, 120 pounds, with a slim build, blonde shoulder length hair and blue eyes. VILKOVA was last seen wearing a grey University of Toronto hooded sweatshirt and plaid pajama type pants. 20160603_014121-1

London police bust suspected oxycodone dealers on Huron St

On Friday June 03, 2016 at approximately 7:04 p.m. London Police executed a search warrant at an address on Huron St.

Seized as a result the warrant was a quantity of Canadian currency as well as the following illegal substances:

135 Oxycodone pills

12 Hydromorphone pills

10.4 grams of marihuana

Arrested and charged jointly with one count each of possession of a schedule 2 substance for the purpose of trafficking and two counts each of possession of a schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking is 57 year old Michael Ronald Doiron and 26 year old Michael Joseph Doiron, both of London.

Michael Ronald Doiron was also charged with one count of possession of property obtained by crime not exceeding $5000 as a result of stolen identification located inside the residence.

Two London crack dealers busted after warrant executed on Kipps Lane

On Friday June 03, 2016 at approximately 3:40 p.m. members of the Guns and Drugs Section executed search warrants at an address on Kipps Lane as well as associated vehicles located at the address.  As a result of the execution of these warrants the following items were seized:

92 grams of crack cocaine

141 grams of cocaine

135 grams of crystal methamphetamine

14 grams of marihuana

7 Oxycodone pills

A sum of Canadian currency was also seized.

Arrested and charged jointly with one count of possession of a schedule 2 substance and 4 counts of possession of a schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking are 39 year old Lisa Seabrook and 35 year old Thomas Beasley both of London.

Chatham police respond to a string of B&Es

The Chatham-Kent Police Service responded to 150 calls for service in the last 24 hours, 2 people were arrested.

Break and Enter, Chatham CK16016099
Sometime between the overnight on June 2nd, unknown suspects forced their way into a construction site on the corner of St. Clair Street and Grand Avenue East in Chatham. Once inside the suspects stole multiple construction tools valued at approximately $1100.

Sometime over the past couple of days unknown suspects entered a vacant residence that is under-going renovations on King Street East, Chatham. Once inside the suspects stole approximately $40 worth of copper wiring.

Sometime over the last couple of days a residence on Tecumseh Line, Tilbury had been broken into. The suspects ransacked the house before taking 16 long guns, a Polaris ATV, and multiple personal items.

Female arrested for shoplifting CK16016142
Yesterday afternoon a 39yr female attended the Walmart in Chatham and left the store with $90 worth of merchandise. The female made no attempt to pay for the items. The female was approached and arrested by store security. During the arrest the female aggressively resisted. The female was able to make it to her vehicle and sped away almost hitting store security.

The female was located by Police moments later and arrested. The female has been charged with Theft &Possession Under, Resist Arrest and Dangerous drive. The female was later released on conditions with a future court date.

Motor Vehicle Collision Wheatly CK16016173
Yesterday evening a motor cycle collided with a pickup truck east of Wheatly on Talbot Trail. The driver of the motor Cycle was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Total damage is estimated at $12000. The driver of the pickup truck was issued a 3 day licensed suspension.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.

Update – collision under investigation – deceased identified

(HALDIMAND COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Haldimand County Detachment investigated a motor vehicle collision at a Haldimand County Road 9, Hagersville, Haldimand County, Ontario address.

On Friday, June 3, 2016 at approximately 7:28 a.m., OPP, Haldimand County Fire Services and Paramedics responded to a motor vehicle collision involving two (2) vehicles.

Through the course of investigation, it has been determined that a black coloured GMC Denali pickup truck  was travelling northbound on Sandusk Road when it collided at the intersection of Haldimand County Road 9 with a blue coloured Chevrolet Equinox that was travelling westbound on Haldimand County Road 9.

As a result of the collision, the westbound vehicle left the roadway and rolled over. The northbound vehicle continued through the intersection and left the roadway and entered the Hagersville Quarry.

The driver of the Equinox, a 52-year-old female and the passenger, a 22-year-old female both residents of Haldimand County, Ontario were transported to a local area hospitals where they were treated for minor injuries.

Members from the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit attended and located a male inside the pickup truck that was submerged in approximately 25 feet of water.  A crane operated truck was utilized to remove the vehicle so the male could be extricated.

As a result, 26-year-old Mathieu GUIMOND of Edmundston, New Brunswick was pronounced deceased at the scene by the attending coroner.

OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators are assisting with the investigation.

Speed and lack of seatbelt use are being considered as contributing factors.

Haldimand County Road 9 at Sandusk Road was closed for approximately 11 hours to allow for police investigation.

The investigation is continuing.

OPP recover the body of American man from Marmion Lake

UPDATE-On Friday June 3rd, 2016 at 12:15 pm members of the Rainy Rivers District Detachment of the OPP as well as a Conservation Officer from the MNRF recovered the remains of Nicolas Fox (63) of Ballwin, Missouri.

A post mortem examination will be conducted in Thunder Bay on Monday June 6, 2016.


(ATIKOKAN, ON) – On Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 4:30 pm, officers from the Atikokan Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call for assistance on Marmion Lake.

A 63 year old male from Ballwin Missouri, had entered the water to retrieve a boat, the male subsequently went underwater and did not surface.

Police are currently at the scene along with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) conducting a search of the area.

The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) have been called in to assist and should arrive sometime today.

Three teens charged in Wasaga Beach murder

(WASAGA BEACH, ON) – The OPP is continuing the investigation into the death of an 18-year old male after an altercation on Saturday May 21, 2016 in the Town of Wasaga Beach.

This investigation, which is being conducted under the direction of Detective Inspector Andy Raffay of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB)‎ and by Detectives from the Central Region Crime Unit and the Regional Support Team (RST) has culminated in the arrest of three people.

Overnight, OPP Detectives were assisted by the Durham Regional Police Service Tactical Team along with their Guns and Gangs Unit and as a result, Police have charged the following males with “Second Degree Murder”:

-Johnathan D. LANDSBERG; 18-years old, Whitby, Ontario

-Eric R. TALBOT; 19-years old, Pickering, Ontario.

-Austin D. ZAMBRANO-PETERSON; 18-years old, North York, Ontario‎.

The three males have been charged in relation to the death of Francesco MOLINARO and are scheduled to appear today (June 4, 2016) at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Newmarket.

Man faces charges after vehicle runs into house

(HALDIMAND COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Haldimand County Detachment investigated a motor vehicle collision at an Indian Line Road, Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nations, Haldimand County, Ontario address.

On Sunday, June 5, 2016 at approximately 5:12 a.m., officers responded to a single motor vehicle collision.

Through the course of investigation, it has been determined that a grey coloured Nissan  was travelling northbound on Sandusk Road when it entered the intersection of Indian Line Road. The vehicle continued northbound through the intersection and subsequently struck the side of a home before coming to rest in the rear of the yard.

The male driver fled from the vehicle on foot after the homeowner confronted him. Six Nations Police along with officers from the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Haldimand Detachment located the male running eastbound from the location through other residential properties.

A 22-year-old male from Caledonia, Ontario was taken into custody without incident and was transported to a local area hospital by paramedics for minor injuries that were sustained in the collision.

The occupants of the residence were not injured as a result of this incident.

The investigation is continuing and charges are pending.

OPP searching for missing 77 year old in Havelock area

(Havelock-Belmont-Methuen Township, ON) – Members of the Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to assist with a missing elderly woman this evening just before 8:30pm.

Margaret NEWTON (age 77) is missing from the area of North Belmont Concession 10 in the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen north of the Village of Havelock. Mrs. Newton is described as:

Caucasian female
Short grey straight hair and brown eyes with moles around her eyelids
5’7” tall and 170Lbs
Last seen wearing a red nylon spring jacket
Black cotton capri pants
Black Velcro walking shoes293018861.2

Margaret has not been seen since she went for a walk on Monday May 31, 2016. Family members advise that it is not unusual for her to walk to town and be in absentia for upwards to 3-4 days. This recent absence is considerably longer and her family has now become concerned for her safety.

Missing woman, Tassia Mouhterous, 79

The Toronto Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance locating a missing woman.

Tassia Mouhterous, 79, was last seen on Sunday, June 5, 2016, at 10:30 a.m., at her home near the Leslie Street and Finch Avenue East area.

She is described as 5’3″, 140 lbs., with short white hair. She was last seen wearing a black sweater, black dress, black stockings and shoes.

Niagara Falls structure fire causes $70,000 damage

On June 4, 2016 at approximately 11:50 pm members of the Niagara Falls Fire Department and Niagara Regional Police Service responded to a structure fire in the area of Lundy’s Lane and Mouland Avenue in Niagara Falls.

A two car detached garage and a vehicle were destroyed in the blaze.  No one was injured.

Members of the Niagara Falls Detective Office are working in conjunction with the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

Police seeking assistance in identifying a male involved in disturbance at Fallsview Casino

On Sunday June 5th, 2016 in the early morning hours at approximately 3:00 am uniformed members from the Niagara Regional Police Casino Unit responded to reports of a possible stabbing at the Fallsview Casino in the city of Niagara Falls.

It was determined that a group of males were involved in a heated argument within a nearby liquor establishment.  The argument continued outside and onto the sidewalk, then eventually erupted into a large fight at the main entrance to the Fallsview Casino.

One of the males involved received several puncture wounds to the abdomen sustaining minor-moderate injuries.  He was taken to the Greater Niagara General Hospital then eventually transported to Hamilton General where he was treated for his injuries and remains in stable condition.

The suspect is described as, male, white, 25 years, 5’10 with a slender build, approximately 170 lbs.  He had very bushy brownish red hair with a possible day or two growth of facial hair.  He was wearing a light gray t-shirt and beige pants with black shoes.  The male removed his shirt shortly after the disturbance, then replaced it with a dark dress shirt or jacket.

The male was last seen in the area of Fallsview boulevard on foot.

Two arrested after Pickering robbery

Police arrested two teenagers and are searching for another after three males were robbed at knifepoint in Pickering.

On Saturday, June 4, 2016, at approximately 9:35 p.m., officers in West Division responded to the area of Valley Farm Road and Avonmore Square for a robbery that had just occurred. Three teenaged victims were walking on Valley Farm Road when they were approached by three male suspects, one armed with a knife. The suspect with the knife stood watch while the other two suspects robbed the victims of their belongings, which included cash and a cellphone. The suspects ran north after the robbery.

Officers in the area spotted the suspects and arrested two of them at gunpoint after a brief foot pursuit. Some stolen items were recovered. The third suspect was not located.

The victims were not physically injured during the robbery.

Kishawn ASHER, age 18, of Farmers Avenue in Ajax and a 16-year-old male from Ajax are charged with: Robbery, Possession of Weapons Dangerous; and Possession of Stolen Property Under $5,000. Both were held for a bail hearing. The 16-year-old cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Suspect #3 is described as male, black, 16 to 18 years old.

Man shot in the leg in Ajax

A 24-year-old Toronto man was shot in the leg in the rear parking lot of an industrial building in Ajax over the weekend.

On Saturday, June 4, 2016, officers were called to a Scarborough hospital after a man was brought in with a gunshot wound to his leg. The victim said he was shot during an altercation in the rear parking lot of an industrial building on Bayly Street just east of Westney Road. The victim left the scene in a vehicle and was taken by a friend to a Scarborough hospital. He was treated for his injuries and released.

Investigators have located two shell casings in the parking lot and are looking for a description of the suspect. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Det. Yamada of the West Division Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2529.
