On Saturday May 28, 2016, just shortly before 4:00am, Hamilton Police received a report about a man that was observed in the area of Cross Street and King Street East in Dundas. It was indicated that they believed the man to be peering into the windows of vehicles and most likely attempting to steal property from within.

Police officers were dispatched by the communications team into the area to investigate further.

Police located the man in the area and stopped the him while advising him of the reports. The man’s identity was confirmed. Investigation revealed that the man was wanted for robbery, failing to attend court and breach of probation. Further investigation also resulted in the police officers charging the man in relation to an ongoing investigation for the theft of a credit card that was stolen from a vehicle and used on May 26, 2016.

The man was arrested and the warrants executed. Police have opposed the man’s bail and he is now before the courts to answer to the charges against him.

While there was no evidence to charge the man with a theft, the report about the suspicious man from the citizen most likely prevented other crimes from taking place based on the observations of the man’s behaviour this evening and ultimately helped to locate the man as part of an ongoing investigation in which there was evidence to charge him with other offences. Hamilton Police Service continues to remind the community to report all suspicious people or suspected criminal activity in their neighbourhoods.

CHARGED: Mark Werner – 27 year old man from Hamilton Ontario

CHARGES: Theft of credit card, possession of/use/traffic credit card, fail to comply probation. Criminal warrants executed – robbery, failing to attend court and breach probation

This past weekend, another 13 drivers were arrested from Friday May 27, 2016, through to Sunday May 30, 2016, and charged with alcohol and drug-related criminal driving offences.

Of the 13 arrests, four were a result of motor vehicle collisions. Officers conducting R.I.D.E. spot checks and general patrol located five impaired drivers and four of the arrests were as a result of concerned citizens calling 9-1-1 to report possible impaired drivers.

On Saturday, May 28, 2016, shortly before 7:30 p.m., officers came upon a collision between a motorcycle and a car on Metro Road and Spring Road in the Town of Georgina. The rider of the motorcycle, a 47-year-old man from the Town of Georgina, was taken to hospital suffering from life-threatening injuries. On Sunday, May 29, 2016, shortly before 1 a.m., officers were responding to a possible impaired driver that had been called in by a citizen in the area of Highway 7 and Highway 427 in the City of Vaughan. When officers arrived they located three vehicles, including the suspect vehicle that had been involved in a serious collision. As a result, two people were taken to hospital suffering from injuries and 56-year-old Harjit Singh GILL, from the City of Brampton has been charged with Impaired Driving Cause Bodily Harm and Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Cause Bodily Harm.

On Sunday, May 29, 2016, shortly before 6 a.m., police responded to a single-vehicle collision in the area of Major Mackenzie Drive West and Timber Creek Boulevard in the City of Vaughan. Impaired driving is the number one criminal cause of death in Canada. When you drink or use drugs and drive you not only risk your life and those of your passengers, but the lives of every other driver and pedestrian on the road.

We continue to urge citizens to report impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1 as part of our Safe Roads… Your Call program. We consider these calls a potentially life-threatening crime in progress and we respond to these calls promptly. The message is clear:  DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL OR USE DRUGS AND DRIVE.
