York Regional Police is supporting the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police 2016 National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day, Saturday, May 21, 2016. York Region residents who have unused or expired prescriptions drugs are able to drop them off to any pharmacy around York Region at no cost.
During the week of May 16 to 20, 2016, York Regional Police officers will be attending various pharmacies throughout the Region distributing drug awareness information and reminding residents that every day is drug drop-off day. Members of the public are encouraged to speak with York Regional Police officers who will be on hand to answer your questions and speak to you regarding the effects of prescription drug abuse, including accidental overdose deaths, impaired driving and more.

All of above locations will have drop off times between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This drug-abuse prevention strategy encourages residents to gather up their unused and expired prescription medication from their homes and dispose of them regularly in a safe and convenient method at participating pharmacies year-round. Residents should call ahead to ensure that their pharmacy is accepting the specific drugs being dropped off. Region of York Hazardous Waste sites will also accept expired medication.
According to the Canadian Mental Health Association more than 300,000 Canadian children and teens have taken prescription medications not prescribed to them.
Police are also concerned misuse of medication, prescription or over the counter, can lead to criminal activity, such as health-care fraud, robbery, impaired driving and drug trafficking.
